After very disappointing starts by both Asian Teams, they look to see they can make any improvement in the second half of the 2020 MLB Season. At the All-Star Break, the NC Dinos were 23-65 (.261) and the Hawks at 26-61 (.299). With Playoffs and a decent record out of reach, both of these teams are competing to see who will get the #1 pick. Will look to see how each team did in the second half of the year. Also, name Team MVP for both teams.
Results and Team Reports (Start of Offseason 11/17/2020)
Safe to say the first season for both these teams was a disappointment. Both finished lost 100+ games and finish last in each league. The Hawks were the better of the two finishing 54-108 (.333) while the Dinos went 48-114 (.299). These teams did have one head to head series in late August. Were the Hawks on the series 2-1. (G1: 6-1 Dinos, G2: 5-0 Hawks, and G3: 2-1 Hawks ). Finally, these teams also had traded with each other at the deadline. (Trade Details: here). Below are the reports for both teams and each of their MVPs.
NC Dinos 48-114 (.296)
It's easy to say the Dinos had no bite this season. They had a run differential of -278. This team was the opposite of clutch going 13-33 in one-run games and 3-13 in extra-inning games. Because of their poor performance in close games, they were 8 games below their Pythagorean expectation. Also interesting they won 24 games both pre and post all-star break. So at least they were constant. At the of the season the dinos ended up firing their manager. Despite their mediocrity, they still had more wins than the 2018 Orioles and the 2019 Tigers. With a current budget of $58 Million and player payroll of $22 million, the dinos could a factor in the free agency market.
Team MVP: Eui Ji Yang (Catcher) (.311/22 HR/81 RBI)
Yang Was the clear choice for the Dinos. He led the team in Average, Home Runs, OPS, and WAR. Also was an All-Star and won player of the week. Finally, he was one of the best catchers in the AL. Lead AL Catchers in AVG, 3rd in HRs, RBIs, and 2nd in OPS and WAR. With 2 years left on his deal expect Yang to be the centerpiece for this team in the next few years.
Honorable Mentions:
Sung-Bum Na (RF) (.299/19 HR/89 RBI)
Alex Mills (SP) (7-9/4.28 ERA/135 K/1.35 WHIP)
Fukuoka Softbank Hawks 54-108 (.333)
The Hawks had a very up & down season that still lead them to the worst record in the NL. After going 4-23 in June they went 13-13 in July. Like the Dinos, they also won the same amount of games pre and post ASB (27 Wins). Also, like the Dinos, they fired their manager too. The biggest problem for the Hawks is that they couldn't score. They ranked last in the NL in Runs (558), Average (.237), OPS (.657), and WAR(0.2). The Hawks actually had a decent Bullpen ranking 9th in the NL with an ERA of 4.11. The Hawks are expected to have $15+ Million for the FA Period.
Team MVP: Yuki Yanagita (Center Fielder) (.296/20 HR/65 RBI)
Yanagita was the Hawks lone All-Star this year. He led the Hawks in most offensive catalogs including Average, HR, RBIs, OPS, WAR, AB, Runs, Hits, and Stolen Bases. Yanagita who is 32 is locked up with the Hawks until 2026.
Honorable Mentions:
Nobuhiro Matsuda (RF) (.270/14 HR/53 RBI)
Willimas Perez (SP) (6-9/4.85 ERA/80 K/1.52 WHIP)
